A Glimpse into History
Barbadillo de Herreros has a long and interesting past. People have lived here since the 10th century, which is over a thousand years ago! Imagine what life was like back then.
The Mining Boom
The village really grew and became busy in the early 20th century. This was its "golden age." At that time, Barbadillo de Herreros had around 1,000 people living there. The main reason for this growth was the discovery of iron in the nearby mountains.
- Iron Mining: The area around Barbadillo de Herreros was rich in iron ore. This metal was very important for making tools, machines, and buildings.
- Train Line: To transport the heavy iron from the mines, a special train line was built. This made it easier to move the iron to other places where it could be used.
- Factories and Foundries: The village also had factories and foundries. These were places where raw iron was melted down and shaped into useful products. This created many jobs for the people living in Barbadillo.
Population Changes
Sadly, the good times didn't last forever. When the iron mines eventually closed down, many people lost their jobs. This led to a big decline in the population throughout the 20th century. People had to move away to find work elsewhere.
According to a census taken in 2004, the municipality had a population of only 148 people. By 2018, the population had decreased further to 109 residents. This shows how much the village has changed since its busy mining days.
