Barbara Anderson's Life and Writing Journey
Barbara Lillias Romaine Wright was born in Hastings. She went to the University of Otago and earned a science degree in 1947. In 1951, she married Neil Anderson. He was an officer in the Royal New Zealand Navy. Later, he became the head of New Zealand's defence forces. They had two sons together.
Becoming a Writer
Before becoming a writer, Barbara worked as a medical technologist. She also spent time as a teacher. Later, she decided to go back to university. She studied at the Victoria University of Wellington and got another degree in 1984.
In 1983, Barbara took a special writing class. It was taught by a famous writer named Bill Manhire. After this class, she started her writing career. Her short stories were published in well-known magazines. These included Landfall, Sport, and the New Zealand Listener.
Her First Books
Barbara's first book was a collection of short stories. It was called I Think We Should Go Into the Jungle. Her third book was a novel named Portrait of the Artist's Wife. This book was published in 1992. It won a top prize at the Goodman Fielder Wattie Book Awards. The book became a bestseller and was praised in New Zealand and around the world.
Awards and Recognition
Barbara's husband, Neil Anderson, was given a special honour in 1982. He became a "Sir," and Barbara was then known as Lady Anderson. In 2009, she received an honorary degree from the University of Otago. This was a Doctor of Literature degree. In 2011, she received another important award. It was the Arts Foundation Icon Award. This award celebrates artists who have made a huge impact.
Barbara Anderson passed away in Auckland on March 24, 2013.
