Barbara Farris: A Basketball Star
Barbara Farris had a great career playing basketball. She was known for her strong play on the court. She played for several teams during her time in the WNBA.
College Years and Early Career
Barbara went to St. Martin's Episcopal School and finished in 1994. She is now part of their Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame. After high school, she attended Tulane University. She studied sociology there and graduated in 1998.
While at Tulane, Barbara played for the Green Wave women's basketball team. She was a standout player. In her junior year, she was named to the All-Star first team for Conference USA. She also achieved 34 "double-doubles" during her college career. A double-double means a player gets double-digit numbers in two different stats, like points and rebounds, in one game.
After college, Barbara started her professional career. She played for the New England Blizzard in the American Basketball League. She also played basketball in other countries. These included France, Spain, and Korea.
Playing in the WNBA
Barbara Farris played for the Detroit Shock from 2000 to 2005. She was a key part of the team. In 2003, she helped the Detroit Shock win the WNBA Championship. This was a big achievement in her career.
Later, she played for the New York Liberty. In the 2007 season, she played in 28 regular-season games. She also played in all three of the Liberty's playoff games. In 2006, she was a starter for the team. However, in 2007, she played less after the Liberty added new players.
In 2008, Barbara played for the Phoenix Mercury. She then returned to the Detroit Shock in 2009. She retired from playing professional basketball that same year.
Hall of Fame Honors
Barbara Farris has been recognized for her amazing basketball career. In 2004, she was inducted into the Tulane Athletics Hall of Fame. This honor celebrates her achievements at Tulane University.
In 2017, she received another special award. She was inducted into the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame. This shows her impact on sports in her home area.
Coaching Career
After her playing days, Barbara Farris became a basketball coach. She has served as an assistant coach for several teams. She was an assistant coach for the New York Liberty. She also coached for the Stetson Hatters. Currently, she is an assistant coach for the Southern Miss Lady Eagles.
