About Barbara Schwartz
Barbara Schwartz was born in Philadelphia in 1949. She loved art from a young age. She studied art at Carnegie Mellon University to earn her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
After finishing her studies, Barbara moved to New York City. This is where she truly began her art career. Her first art show was in 1975 at the Willard Gallery. It was a big step for her as a young artist.
Her Unique Art Style
In the late 1970s, Barbara wanted to make abstract painting new and exciting. She started adding ideas from different cultures. For example, she used decorative elements inspired by Islamic art.
She also loved to mix different shapes in her art. She combined sharp, geometric shapes with soft, organic forms. This made her artwork very unique and interesting to look at. Her painted plaster artworks were part of a group of artists in New York called the Pattern and Decoration movement. These artists enjoyed using patterns and decorations in their art.
Exploring Different Materials
Barbara loved to try new things with her art. She experimented with many different materials. She used wood, glass, and metal to create her sculptures.
She often made pieces by casting them in bronze and aluminum. This is a process where melted metal is poured into a mold. In the 1990s, she started using glazed ceramic for her artworks. This gave her pieces a smooth, shiny finish.
Teaching and Exhibitions
Barbara Schwartz also enjoyed teaching art. From 1978, she taught at the School of Visual Arts. She helped many young artists learn and grow.
