History
The 1913 Earthquake
On Saturday, March 8, 1913, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 shook the Santa Rosa area. It caused a lot of damage to Cuilapa, which is the capital city of the department.
The main earthquake and the smaller shakes that followed destroyed many homes. The main church and the prison were also badly damaged. Many people were affected by this event.
Similar damage happened in Barberena and other nearby towns like Cerro Redondo, Llano Grande, and El Zapote. Other places such as Fraijanes, Pueblo Nuevo Viñas, Coatepeque, and Jalpatagua also felt the earthquake. Near Cuilapa, there were landslides, and roads were blocked. A long crack even appeared on Los Esclavos hill.
Climate
Barberena has a tropical climate. This means it's usually warm all year round. It's known as a Tropical savanna climate (Aw) according to the Köppen system.
