History of Barnard
Barnard was first settled in 1888. This happened when a railroad line, built by the Chicago, Kansas & Western Railroad Company, reached the area. The city was officially made a city (incorporated) in 1904.
Barnard got its name from J.F. Barnard, who was an employee of the railroad company. Later, in 1901, another big railroad company, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, took over the Chicago, Kansas & Western Railroad. In 1983, the railroad decided to stop using the train line that went through Barnard.

Barnard used to have its own schools, but they closed in 1966. This happened because of a school unification program. The high school sports teams in Barnard were called the "Cardinals."
