History of Barnsley

Who Lived Here First?

The first people to live in this area were the Awabakal people. They are the original Indigenous Australians of this land.

How Barnsley Got Its Name

European settlers first arrived in this area in 1829. The district was originally known as 'Teralba'. However, its name changed to 'Barnsley' when the local school opened in 1865. The town was named after a place called Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England.

Early Life and Work

In its early days, Barnsley was mainly a farming community. People grew fruits in orchards, tended vegetable farms, and raised dairy cows. Before cars were invented, everyone traveled either by walking or riding horses.

At the start of the 20th century, Barnsley was a very small village. Many services we have today did not exist back then. The first post office in Barnsley opened on July 1, 1907. The town finally got its water supply in 1949.
