A Baron Strathclyde is a special kind of noble title in Britain. It's part of the Peerage of the United Kingdom, which is a group of people who hold these old and important titles.
This title has been created two times in British history. Each time, it was given to an important person.
Contents
First Baron Strathclyde (1914)
The first time the title Baron Strathclyde was created was on January 15, 1914. It was given to a politician and judge named Alexander Ure. He became the first Baron Strathclyde, from a place called Sandyford in Lanarkshire.
This first title ended when Alexander Ure passed away in 1928. He didn't have anyone to pass the title on to.
Second Baron Strathclyde (1955)
The title was created again on May 4, 1955. This time, it was given to Thomas Dunlop Galbraith. He was a politician from the Scottish Unionist Party. He became the first Baron Strathclyde of this second creation, from Barskimming in Ayrshire.
Since 1985, the title has been held by his grandson, the second Baron. His full name is Thomas Galloway Dunlop du Roy de Blicquy Galbraith.
The current Baron Strathclyde is still an important person in British politics. He is one of the ninety elected hereditary peers who remain in the House of Lords. The House of Lords is part of the UK Parliament. Most hereditary peers (people who inherit their titles) no longer have an automatic right to be in the House of Lords after a law was passed in 1999.
Who Held the Title?
Here are the people who have held the title of Baron Strathclyde:
First Creation (1914)
- Alexander Ure, 1st Baron Strathclyde (1853–1928)
Second Creation (1955)
- Thomas Dunlop Galbraith, 1st Baron Strathclyde (1891–1985)
- Thomas Galloway Dunlop du Roy de Blicquy Galbraith, 2nd Baron Strathclyde (born 1960)
The current Baron Strathclyde has three daughters. In this type of title, it usually passes down to male heirs. So, the person next in line to inherit the title is his brother.
Next in Line for the Title
The current Baron's brother, the Honourable Charles William du Roy de Blicquy Galbraith (born 1962), is the heir presumptive. This means he is expected to inherit the title if the current Baron doesn't have a son.
Charles Galbraith's son, Humphrey Eldred Galloway Galbraith (born 1994), would be next in line after his father.
