After serving in the Royal Navy, he became a chartered accountant. He worked in this field from 1925 to 1970. In 1955, he was given the title of Lord Strathclyde. He passed away three decades later. His oldest son, Sir Tam Galbraith, died in 1982. Because of this, his grandson, Thomas Galbraith, 2nd Baron Strathclyde, inherited the title.

Early Life and Education

Thomas Galbraith was born into Clan Galbraith. This family has roots going back to the 12th century. He was one of eight children. His father was William Brodie Galbraith, a surgeon. His mother was Annie Jack Dunlop.

He attended several schools. These included Glasgow Academy, Eastman's in Southsea, and the Royal Naval College, Osborne and Royal Naval College in Dartmouth.

Naval Service

Galbraith joined the Royal Navy in 1903. He became a Lieutenant in 1913. During the First World War, he served on the battleships HMS Audacious (1869) and HMS Queen Elizabeth (1913). Three of his younger brothers died in this war. They were serving in the Highland Light Infantry. He left the Royal Navy in 1922 and officially retired in 1925.

When the Second World War started, Galbraith joined the Scottish Naval Command. Later, he went to Washington, D.C.. There, he represented the British Admiralty. He helped negotiate for supplies before the Lend-Lease program began in 1941.

Political Career

Galbraith's political journey started in local government. He was a councillor on Glasgow Corporation from 1933 to 1940. For some of that time, he was a leader in the Progressive Party.

He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Glasgow Pollok. He held this position from 1940 to 1955. He was first elected in a special election. Then he won general elections in 1945, 1950, and 1951. He served as Under-Secretary of State for Scotland in Winston Churchill's government in 1945.

On May 4, 1955, he was made a peer. This meant he received a special title and could join the House of Lords. He took his seat the next day. He worked as a Minister of State at the Scottish Office until 1958. By 1964, Lord Strathclyde was leading the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board.

He was honored with the Freedom of Dingwall in 1965. He also received the Freedom of the City of Aberdeen in 1966.
