Nigel Ivan Forbes, the 22nd Lord Forbes, was an important Scottish soldier, businessman, and politician. He was born on February 19, 1918, and passed away on March 5, 2013. Before he became Lord Forbes in 1953, people knew him as the Master of Forbes.

Nigel Forbes was the only son of Atholl Laurence Cunyngham Forbes, who was the 21st Lord Forbes. He went to Harrow School and then to the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, which is a famous military academy.

Military Service and Early Career

During the Second World War, Nigel Forbes served as a Major in the Grenadier Guards, a well-known part of the British Army. He was injured while serving his country. After the war, from 1947 to 1948, he worked as a Military Assistant to the High Commissioner for Palestine.

Political Life

In 1953, Nigel Forbes became the 22nd Lord Forbes after his father passed away. Two years later, in 1955, he was chosen to be a Scottish Representative Peer. This meant he could represent Scotland in the House of Lords, which is part of the UK Parliament. He joined the Conservative Party. He was the very last person to have served as a Scottish Representative Peer.

From 1958 to 1959, he worked for Prime Minister Harold Macmillan as the Minister of State for Scotland. This was a big job where he helped manage Scottish affairs for the government.

Besides his work in national politics, he also helped his local community. He was a member of the Alford District Council from 1955 to 1958. He also led the River Don district board from 1962 to 1972. In 1955, he became a justice of the peace for Aberdeenshire, which meant he helped with local law and order. In 1958, he became a deputy lieutenant.

Business Ventures

Lord Forbes was also involved in many businesses. He was a Director at Grampian Television from 1960 to 1988. He was also the Deputy Chairman of Tennent Caledonian Breweries from 1964 to 1974. Later, he was the Chairman of Rolawn Ltd from 1975 to 1998. For his service, he was given the honor of being appointed a KBE in 1960.

Family Life

In 1942, Lord Forbes married the Hon. Rosemary Katharine. She was the daughter of Gustavus William Hamilton-Russell, the 9th Viscount Boyne. They had two sons and one daughter. Their oldest son, Malcolm Nigel Forbes, became the 23rd Lord Forbes and lives at Castle Forbes. Lady Forbes lived to be 98 years old and passed away in 2019.
