History of Barrero
How Barrero Became Part of the U.S.
Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This war ended in 1898 with the Treaty of Paris of 1898. After the treaty, Puerto Rico was no longer controlled by Spain. It became an "unincorporated territory" of the U.S. This means it belongs to the U.S. but is not a state.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States Department of War took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that Barrero and a nearby barrio called Atalaya had a combined population of 1,157 people.

Understanding Barrios and Sectors
In Puerto Rico, "barrios" are like major divisions within a town or city. Think of them as large neighborhoods. These barrios are then divided into even smaller local areas. These smaller areas are called sectores (which means sectors in English).
Different Types of Sectors
The names for these sectors can be different. Some are just called "sector." Others might be known as "urbanización," "reparto," "barriada," or "residencial." Each name describes a slightly different type of community or housing area.
