Barrika (also known as Barrica in Spanish) is a small town and municipality in Spain. It is located in the province of Biscay, which is part of the Basque Country.
Barrika is thought to be one of the oldest towns in Biscay. It was founded a very long time ago by someone named Sancho Vela. Because it is close to the sea and near the city of Bilbao, many people have moved to Barrika, especially in the late 1900s.
Today, Barrika is part of a region called Mungialdea. About 1,541 people live here, and the town covers an area of 7.77 square kilometers.

When Did People First Live in Barrika?
Scientists have found old tools and signs of human life in a place called Kurtzio in Barrika. These discoveries show that people lived here during the prehistoric Asturian culture period. This means Barrika has been home to humans for thousands of years!
How Barrika Began as a Town
The way Barrika was organized, like having a church parish, goes back to the Middle Ages. It is believed that Sancho Vela founded a main house in Barrika around the year 496. This house later became the center of the town and its church.
Whaling and Early Jobs
For a long time, the people of Barrika did more than just farming and raising animals. They also hunted whales! This important activity is mentioned in an old document called a Carta Puebla. This special paper was given by Lope Díaz III de Haro, who was the Lord of Biscay, in the 13th century. It gave the town certain rights and rules.
Barrika's Role in Regional Meetings
Barrika also had a voice in important regional decisions. The town had a seat and a vote at the General Meetings held in Guernica. Barrika was the 51st town to have this right, showing its importance in the area's history.
