Barron Mamiya (born January 27, 2000) is a professional surfer from Hawaii. He started competing in the Junior World Surf League (WSL) when he was 11 years old in 2012. In 2018, he won the Men's Pro Junior Vans US Open of Surfing.

As of February 2024, Barron Mamiya is ranked #1 on the WSL Championship Tour.

About Barron Mamiya

Barron was born and grew up in Haleiwa, a community on the North Shore of Oahu, an island in Hawaii. He started surfing at age three, often going out with his dad after work. Barron says his love for surfing and the limited other options in Hawaii were big reasons he kept pursuing the sport.

Growing Up Surfing

As a young surfer, Barron faced challenges. Being a "grom" (a young, less experienced surfer) in Hawaii meant it was hard to catch waves. He also had to deal with the dangers of surfing Hawaii's famous, but risky, surf spots. He once said, "Being a grom out there, surfing, it's hard, you don't catch a lot of waves… you've got to be fully committed, because if you're not… you can get super hurt."

Despite these difficulties, Barron became a very skilled young surfer. He has continued to chase a career in professional surfing. He believes his success comes from always wanting to push himself and show his abilities to himself and others.

Barron's Surfing Career

Since joining the Junior World Surf League in 2012, Barron Mamiya has become known as "one of the most promising young surfers" in the world. He surfs with a regular stance. His special skills include aerial maneuvers (jumps and tricks in the air) and riding inside big waves called barrels.

Junior Tour Highlights

Barron was very active on the Junior Tour starting in 2012. In 2017, he really shined, winning three WSL Junior Hawaii Pros. He became champion at the Sunset Pro Junior, Papara Pro Junior Tahiti, and Pipe Pro Junior. He also finished second at the Hurley Surf Club Pro Junior.

He continued his strong performance in 2018. He placed in the top three of every event he entered. He finished third at the Sunset Pro Junior, second at the HYSDO Pro Junior at Turtle Bay Resort and Pipe Pro Junior, and won the Men's Jr. Vans US Open of Surfing.

Qualifying Tour Journey

Barron has also competed in the Qualifying Tour (QT) since 2015. This tour helps surfers qualify for the main Championship Tour. In 2017, he started getting better results in events like the Sunset Open (ninth place) and the Vans World Cup (fifth place).

These achievements helped his ranking for the 2018 season. He competed in eight events that year. His best result was at the Burton Automotive Pro in Australia, where he made it to the final.

Championship Tour Debut

In May 2018, Barron got a special chance to enter his first Championship Tour event, the Men's Corona Bali Protected. He was given a "wild-card" spot after another surfer, Kelly Slater, pulled out.

Before the event, Barron said he felt "no pressure at all." He was happy for the chance to show his skills without the usual high expectations. His being in this event showed how much he was growing in the surfing world. He finished in 25th place in that event.

As of February 2024, Barron Mamiya is ranked #1 on the WSL Championship Tour. He has an average heat score of 6 and an average wave score of 13.32, with a total of 10,000 points.

One exciting moment was when he won his first Pipe Pro title. He earned a perfect 10-point ride in a tough competition against John John Florence. This win made him the World No. 1.
