Barronette Peak is a tall mountain located in the northeast part of Yellowstone National Park. It stands at 10,354 feet (3,156 m) high. This peak is part of the Absaroka Range. It was named after a famous Yellowstone guide, Jack Baronette, in 1878. Interestingly, his name was misspelled when the mountain was officially named, and it's still spelled that way today!
Who Was Jack Baronette?
Jack Baronette was an important person in the early days of Yellowstone. He was an early guide and a smart businessman.
Building a Bridge
In 1871, Jack Baronette built the very first bridge across the Yellowstone River. This bridge was near where the Lamar River joins the Yellowstone. It helped miners travel to Cooke City, Montana. This made it much easier for people to move around the area.
A Heroic Rescue
In 1870, Jack Baronette lived in Helena, Montana. He helped search for and rescue Truman C. Everts. Everts had gotten lost during a big exploration trip called the Washburn–Langford–Doane Expedition. Jack Baronette's help was very important in finding him.
A Possible Park Leader
Later, in 1884, Jack Baronette was even considered to become the superintendent of Yellowstone. This job is like being the main manager of the park. This shows how respected and well-known he was in the Yellowstone area.
