Barry Howard was born in Nottingham, England. When he was younger, he served in the Royal Navy. During this time, he discovered his passion for acting.
Early Life and Training
After his time in the Navy, Barry wanted to go to drama school at the Birmingham Theatre School. He couldn't get a special grant to help pay for it. So, he worked backstage at the Alexandra Theatre for almost two years. This job helped him save enough money to pay for his acting lessons.
Famous TV Roles
Barry Howard appeared in many television shows. His most well-known role was as Barry Stuart-Hargreaves in the first seven seasons of Hi-de-Hi!. This was a very popular BBC sitcom. He also acted in other shows like Terry and June, You Rang, M'Lord?, and Dad. In 2009, he was in a special Christmas episode of Doctor Who. He played the driver of a mini-bus for a group of older people looking for the Doctor. In 2015, he even lent his voice to the main character in a comedy show called Mr Snufflesworth, which featured a dachshund dog.
Stage Work
Besides his TV work, Barry was also a skilled stage actor. He was especially famous for his roles in pantomime. He often played one of the funny Ugly Sisters, frequently performing alongside another well-known actor, John Inman.
