Early Life and Start in Golf

Barry Lane was born in Hayes, Middlesex, England. He grew up in a town called Bracknell. He didn't start playing golf until he was 14 years old.

Even though he started later than some, he quickly became very good. By the age of 16, in 1976, he was already an assistant professional at Downshire Golf Club. He worked there for eight years, learning and improving his game.

Becoming a Professional Golfer

Barry Lane first joined the European Tour in 1982. This is one of the biggest golf tours in the world. It took him three tries to qualify for the tour.

In his early years on the tour, he didn't have much success. But he kept working hard. In 1983, he won the PGA Assistants' Championship. This win allowed him to play in the World Assistants' Championship in Florida, which he also won by a large margin.

Lane qualified for the European Tour again in 1986. From then on, he played on the tour for 26 years in a row, until 2011. This shows how dedicated and consistent he was.

Success on the European Tour

Barry Lane's best years were in the early to mid-1990s. He finished among the top ten players on the tour's money list three times. His highest ranking was fifth in 1992.

He won four European Tour events between 1988 and 1994. After a few quieter years, his form improved again in the early 2000s. He won his fifth European Tour title in 2004 at the Daily Telegraph Damovo British Masters.

Big Wins and Team Events

One of Barry Lane's most exciting wins was the 1995 Andersen Consulting World Championship of Golf. This tournament was a special event that paid a huge prize of US$1,000,000. This was a very large amount of money for a golf tournament at that time.

He also had the honor of representing Europe in the Ryder Cup in 1993. This is a team competition where the best golfers from Europe play against the best from the United States. He also played for England in the World Cup of Golf and the Alfred Dunhill Cup several times. He also played in the UBS Cup for the Rest of the World team.
