Who is Barry McClements?
Barry McClements was born on December 6, 2001. He grew up in Newtownards, a town in Northern Ireland. From a young age, Barry showed a strong interest in swimming. He trains with the Ards Swimming Club. His coach is Davy Johnston.
Early Life and Journey
Barry was born with a condition called fibular hemimelia. This means that part of a bone in his lower right leg was missing. When he was 10 months old, his right leg was amputated above the knee.
Despite this, Barry did not let it stop him. He started swimming and quickly became very good. He competes in the disability class S9, SB8, and SM9. These classifications help ensure fair competition among para swimmers.
Competing on the World Stage
Barry McClements has represented both Ireland and Northern Ireland in major international swimming events. He has competed at the highest levels of para swimming.
