About Bartolomé Román
Bartolomé Román was born in a town called Montoro in Spain. He learned how to paint from a well-known artist named Vincenzo Carducci. We know this from a historian named Antonio Palomino.
His First Known Works
One of Román's first paintings that we know for sure is from 1616. This painting is now kept at the Museo del Prado, a famous art museum.
A few years later, in 1619, a document showed that Román promised to make a copy of a painting. This tells us that he often worked with other artists, like his teacher Carducci.
Important Paintings
In 1628, Bartolomé Román signed a large painting called Parable of the Wedding. This artwork was made for a church in Madrid, the Royal Convent of La Encarnación. Another famous painter, Diego Velázquez, had recently moved to Madrid. Some people think Velázquez's style might have influenced Román's work.
In the same church, there is also a painting called El Salvador (The Savior). For a long time, people thought Carducci painted it. But now, many believe Román painted it because it looks very similar to another painting in the Bowes Museum in England.
Later Career and Life
After 1629, we have many records about Román and his paintings. In 1630, he worked for the church in Toledo.
In 1634, he joined other painters in Madrid to discuss their profession. They wanted to make sure painting was seen as a respected job. In 1639, his work was reviewed by the Cortes Generales, which was like the Spanish parliament.
In 1644, he signed a painting called Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew. This painting was for a church in Calahorra, but it is now lost.
Bartolomé Román made his will in May 1647. It showed that he didn't have a lot of money. He mentioned his wife, Mary of Thebes. He passed away in 1647. Later, another famous painter, Juan Carreño de Miranda, became his student.
