History of Barton City

Barton City sits at a special spot in Michigan. Its elevation is about 830 feet (253 meters) above sea level. This community has an interesting past, especially with the lumber industry.

From Mud Lake to Barton City

Long ago, Barton City was known by a different name: "Mud Lake." This was because it was located right on the shores of what we now call Jewel Lake. A post office was first set up here on March 10, 1887. George W. LaChapelle was the first postmaster.

In 1912, two surveyors were staying with a local resident named Frank Barton. They decided to plan out a town around the lake. They sold plots of land and chose to name the new town after Frank Barton. So, on April 1, 1912, the post office officially changed its name to Barton City.

Lumbering in the Past

Barton City was once a very important place for lumber companies. It was home to the main offices of both the Potts Lumbering Company and the Loud Lumbering Company. These companies played a big role in the area's early development. They helped shape the community we see today.
