What Does the Name Barva Mean?
The name Barva comes from a leader named Barvac or Barvak. He lived in the area around 1569. The name might have a few different meanings:
- Some think it means New Tlapallan in the Nahuatl language. Or it could be from Tla pallapan, which in the Huetar language was Tabaraba or Abaraba. This means Black River or Dark River.
- Another idea is that it means Anteater Town. This comes from the words Bal (town) and wac (anteater).
- A third idea suggests it means Bees Tribe. This comes from Bar or bur (bees) and ba or bac (tribe).
The name of the city was changed from Barba to Barva in 1974.
