Basile Boli (born 2 January 1967) is a famous former footballer from France. He played as a defender, which means he helped protect his team's goal. After his football career, he became a sports presenter on television.
Basile Boli spent most of his playing days with two big French clubs: Auxerre and Marseille. Later, he also played for Rangers in Scotland, Monaco in France, and Urawa Reds in Japan. Even though he was born in Ivory Coast, he played for the French national team 45 times and scored one goal.
His Football Journey
Basile Boli was born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. When he was young, he moved to France and started playing youth football in Paris. In 1982, he joined AJ Auxerre. He was a strong defender and quickly became part of Auxerre's main team.
In 1986, he made his first appearance for the French national team. He played for France 45 times in total. Because he was such a good player, top clubs in France wanted him.
In 1990, Boli joined Olympique de Marseille. This club was becoming one of the best in France. Basile Boli helped Marseille win the French league, Ligue 1, in 1991 and 1992.
One of his most famous moments was in the 1992–93 UEFA Champions League final. He scored the only goal against A.C. Milan, which helped Marseille win the cup! This was a huge achievement for the club. While at Marseille, he even recorded a song with his teammate Chris Waddle.
After his time at Marseille, Boli moved to Rangers in Scotland in 1994. He played 28 league games and scored two goals, helping Rangers win the league title in the 1994–95 season.
After one season with Rangers, Basile Boli returned to France to play for AS Monaco FC. He finished his football career in 1997 after playing for Urawa Red Diamonds in Japan.
Beyond Football
In 2018, Basile Boli took part in Danse avec les stars, which is the French version of Dancing with the Stars. He danced with his partner Katrina Patchett and finished in 7th place out of 11 contestants.
Family Life
Basile Boli comes from a family of footballers! He is the uncle of several current players: Yannick Boli, Charles Boli, Roli Boli, and Kévin Boli. His older brother, Roger Boli, was also a professional football striker.
