Basilio Augustín y Dávila (born February 12, 1840 – died August 7, 1910) was a Spanish leader. He served as the Governor-General of the Philippines for a short time in 1898. This was a very important period because the Spanish-American War began during his time.

Basilio Augustín's Time in Power

Basilio Augustín was born in Cádiz, Spain, on February 12, 1840. He became a high-ranking official in the Spanish government. On April 11, 1898, he was chosen to be the Governor-General of the Philippines. This was a very important job. The Governor-General was the top Spanish leader in the Philippines.

The Spanish-American War Begins

Soon after Augustín took office, the Spanish–American War started. He thought the war would be quick. He also believed Spain would win easily. However, things did not go as he expected.

The United States Navy defeated Spanish forces. This happened during the Battle of Manila Bay. This big loss changed everything. It led to the return of a Filipino revolutionary leader. His name was Emilio Aguinaldo. He had been living in exile.

Filipino Revolution and Independence

Aguinaldo's return marked a new phase. This was for the Philippine Revolution. On June 12, 1898, Aguinaldo made a big announcement. He issued the Philippine Declaration of Independence. This declared the Philippines free from Spanish rule.

Augustín tried to get support from Filipinos. He wanted to keep Spanish control. He tried to create a group of Filipino leaders. These leaders were called Ilustrados. They were educated Filipinos loyal to Spain. He also tried to form a new local army. This army was called a militia. He hoped these actions would help Spain.

He even offered a large sum of money to Aguinaldo. He offered one million pesos. This was in exchange for Aguinaldo giving up. But Aguinaldo refused the offer. Some Filipino leaders did support Augustín's ideas. This was thanks to the efforts of Pedro Paterno.

The End of His Term

Augustín's plans did not work out well. Most of the Filipino soldiers he trained left. They joined the revolutionaries instead. His group of Filipino leaders also broke up. This happened in 1899. Many of them later signed the Malolos Constitution. They also became part of the Malolos Congress. This was a new government for the Philippines.

Augustín stopped being Governor-General. His term ended on July 24, 1898. In August 1898, the United States Army took control of Manila. Manila is the capital city. In December 1898, Spain signed the Treaty of Paris. This treaty gave control of the Philippines to the United States.

In 1899, another war began. This was the Philippine–American War. It was fought between American and Filipino forces. Basilio Augustín returned to Spain. He died in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, on August 7, 1910.
