Fermín Jáudenes y Álvarez (born July 7, 1836 – died February 11, 1915) was a Spanish army officer. He was also a colonial administrator, which means he helped manage a colony. He served as the Governor-General of the Philippines for a short time in 1898. This was during the Spanish–American War and the second part of the Philippine Revolution.
Early Life and Military Career
Fermín Jáudenes was born on July 7, 1836, in La Coruña, Spain. His family had a military background. In May 1852, when he was 15, he joined the Infantry Academy. After finishing his training, he was stationed in several Spanish cities.
In 1859, Jáudenes went to Morocco to fight in the Hispano-Moroccan War. He showed great bravery in battles and was seriously injured. Because of his actions, he was promoted to Captain. After returning to Spain in 1866, he helped stop an uprising in Madrid.
From 1867, he served in the Northern Spanish Army. His job was to prevent a group called the Carlists from causing trouble during the Third Carlist War. He was promoted several times for his military achievements. In 1872, he became a Commander. By 1874, he was a Lieutenant Colonel. He led his own troops in many battles during the Third Carlist War.
In 1876, he was promoted to Colonel. He then commanded the 12th Infantry Regiment "Zaragoza". Later, he became the head of the Burgos brigade. He also served as the military governor of the Province of Logroño. In 1889, he reached the rank of Brigadier General. By 1895, he held several important military positions across Spain.
Role in the Spanish-American War
Fermín Jáudenes became the Governor-General of the Philippines on July 24, 1898. This was a very difficult time for Spain. The Spanish–American War was happening, and the United States Army was fighting in the Philippines.
During his short time as Governor-General, the capital city of the Philippines, Manila, was handed over to the United States. This happened during what is known as the "mock" Battle of Manila. It was called "mock" because the Spanish and American forces had secretly agreed on the surrender beforehand. This event marked the end of over 330 years of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines.
Jáudenes was in Manila when the Spanish government learned that the previous Governor-General, Basilio Augustín, had tried to negotiate a surrender with Filipino forces. Because of this, Augustín was removed from his post, and Jáudenes was appointed. However, Jáudenes himself was removed from his position on October 5, 1898. After he returned to Spain, he was forced to retire from the military because of the surrender of Manila.
