The Story of Bass Lake
Bass Lake wasn't always a public park. It was created by people, which is why it's called an "artificial lake." In the 1950s, a man named James Harry Cornell bought the land. He used the lake, then called Mills Pond, for a private fishing club.
A Storm and a New Beginning
In 1996, a very strong storm called Hurricane Fran hit the area. This hurricane was so powerful that it destroyed the Bass Lake Dam. When the dam broke, all the water drained out of the lake.
Two years later, in 1998, the Town of Holly Springs bought the empty lake area. They paid $230,000 for it. The town then worked hard to rebuild the dam. They also restored the lake, making it a public place for everyone to enjoy. Bass Lake officially opened to the public in 2004.
