The Bastien River is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into Faillon Lake, which is part of the Mégiscane River system. The river is located in the town of Senneterre, within the La Vallée-de-l'Or Regional County Municipality. This area is in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of Quebec.

The Bastien River flows through the areas known as Martin, Valets, and Faillon townships. It runs mostly through forests, generally flowing south. The main activities in this river area are forestry and outdoor tourism. A main road, R0806, crosses the lower part of the river's basin. Other smaller roads also serve the area. The river's surface is usually frozen from mid-December to mid-April.

River Journey

The Bastien River starts from an unnamed lake high up in the mountains. This lake is about 452 metres (1,483 ft) (about 1,483 feet) above sea level. A mountain peak nearby reaches 513 metres (1,683 ft) (about 1,683 feet).

The source lake is located about 7.0 kilometres (4.3 mi) (about 4.3 miles) north of where the Bastien River meets the Mégiscane River. It is also about 38.5 kilometres (23.9 mi) (about 23.9 miles) northeast of downtown Senneterre.

Here are some of the main rivers and lakes near the Bastien River:

The Bastien River flows for a total of 17.2 kilometres (10.7 mi) (about 10.7 miles). Along its path, it flows northeast through Bastien Lake, which is about 1.9 kilometres (1.2 mi) (about 1.2 miles) long. It also passes through another unnamed lake. The river then flows past a mountain that is 530 metres (1,740 ft) (about 1,739 feet) high. Further along, it receives water from Henri and Abel lakes, and later from Ubald and Ducheneau lakes.

The Bastien River eventually empties into the northern shore of Faillon Lake. Faillon Lake is then crossed by the Mégiscane River. From this point, the Mégiscane River flows southwest and then northwest to Parent Lake (Abitibi). Parent Lake then flows into the Bell River. The Bell River is a tributary of Lake Matagami, which in turn flows into the Nottaway River. The Nottaway River finally empties into James Bay.

The meeting point of the Bastien River and the Mégiscane River is located:

  • About 9.8 kilometres (6.1 mi) (about 6.1 miles) northeast of the end of Faillon Lake.
  • About 44.9 kilometres (27.9 mi) (about 27.9 miles) east of the center of Senneterre village.

River Name

The name "Bastien River" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is the official body for naming places in Quebec.
