The Delestres River is a cool river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the northeast part of Parent Lake (Abitibi). This lake is part of a bigger water system that includes the Bell River, the Nottaway River, and eventually Rupert Bay.

The Delestres River flows through different areas called townships, like Martin, Augier, and Delestre. Part of the river is even in a special protected area called the Parent Lake Marsh Biodiversity Reserve.

During winter, from about mid-December to mid-April, the river's surface usually freezes over. The main activity in this area is forestry, which means cutting down trees. After that, fun outdoor activities like tourism are the next most popular things to do.

Where the Delestres River Flows

The Delestres River starts in Senneterre, at a place called Lalochetière Lake. This lake is about 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi) long and sits at an elevation of 420 metres (1,380 ft). Other smaller lakes and streams feed water into Lalochetière Lake.

The river flows for about 43.6 kilometres (27.1 mi) (about 27 miles). Here's how it travels:

  • It goes northeast for about 7.1 kilometres (4.4 mi).
  • Then, it turns west for about 5.4 kilometres (3.4 mi), passing over some rapids.
  • Finally, it flows northwest for about 31.1 kilometres (19.3 mi), picking up water from many smaller streams along the way.

The Delestres River ends by flowing into Ignace Bay. This bay is part of a small delta in the northeastern part of Parent Lake (Abitibi). Other rivers like the Robin River and the Lecompte River also join Parent Lake here.

What's in a Name?

The name "Delestres" is used for both the river and a nearby township. This name honors Alonié Delestre, who was a companion of a famous historical figure named Dollard Des Ormeaux.

Before the township was officially named in 1916, the river was called "Shabogama." This is an Algonquian word that means "water penetrates."

The official name "Delestres River" was made formal on December 5, 1968, by the Commission de toponymie du Quebec, which is like a special committee that names places in Quebec.
