Basil Boioannes | Melus of Bari Gilbert Buatère † |
The Battle of Cannae was an important fight that happened in the year 1018. It was fought between the Byzantines and the Lombards. The Byzantines were led by Basil Boioannes, who was a governor in Italy. The Lombards were led by Melus of Bari.
The Lombards also hired some skilled fighters called Norman cavalry mercenaries. These were soldiers who fought for money. Their leader was Gilbert Buatère. To fight against these strong Normans, Basil Boioannes asked for special soldiers called the Varangian Guard. These were elite, well-trained warriors. This battle was one of the first times the Byzantines in southern Italy fought against the Normans.

What Happened at the Battle of Cannae?
The battle was a big disaster for the Lombards and their Norman allies. They were completely defeated by the Byzantine army. Melus of Bari, the Lombard leader, managed to escape. He fled to the Papal States and later found safety with Emperor Henry II in a place called Bamberg.
Who Lost and Who Won?
The Normans lost their leader, Gilbert Buatère, during the battle. Most of his group of Norman fighters were also killed. However, the few Normans who survived this battle were very important. They were the first of many Norman groups to come to southern Italy.
Why Was This Battle Important?
Even though the Normans lost badly at Cannae, this battle marked the beginning of their growing power in southern Italy. Within just one year, the Byzantine Empire actually hired Normans to guard a town called Troia. This shows how the Normans, even after a defeat, started to become a major force in the region.
