The Battle of Llanos de Santa Juana was an important fight during the Mexican War of Independence. It happened on July 12, 1811, in a place called Llanos de Santa Juana, near Cuauhtémoc, in Colima, Mexico. This battle was between two main groups: the Royalists, who supported the Spanish king, and the Mexican rebels, who wanted Mexico to be free from the Spanish Empire.
The Mexican rebels were led by General José Calixto Martínez y Moreno. The Spanish Royalist forces were commanded by Colonel Manuel del Río. In the end, the Spanish Royalists won this battle.
What Happened at the Battle?
The rebel fighters, led by General José Calixto Martínez y Moreno, who was also known as Cadenas, faced a tough defeat. The Royalist forces, under Manuel del Río, were very strong.
The rebel army had about 1,000 soldiers. Sadly, 300 of these soldiers were killed during the battle. Many of these rebels were local villagers. They had weapons but were not trained soldiers. This made it harder for them to fight against the experienced Royalist army.
What Happened After the Battle?
Even though the rebels lost at Llanos de Santa Juana, they quickly bounced back. Just four days later, on July 16, 1811, other rebel groups in Colima took control of the state. These groups were led by Ignacio Sandoval and Miguel Gallaga.
This meant that the loss at Llanos de Santa Juana did not stop the rebels' overall progress. They still managed to gain ground in the fight for Mexican independence.
