Battle of Montiel (1143) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Battle of Montiel was an important fight that happened on March 1, 1143. It was part of a long period in history called the Reconquista. This was when Christian kingdoms in Spain slowly took back control of lands from Muslim rulers.

In this battle, a Christian army led by Muño Alfonso fought against a group called the Almoravids. The Almoravids were a powerful Muslim group from North Africa who ruled parts of Spain at that time. The battle was a big victory for Muño Alfonso and his Christian forces.

Who Fought in the Battle?

On one side was Muño Alfonso, a brave leader. He had knights from cities like Ávila, Segovia, and Toledo. Priests also joined them, showing the religious importance of the fight.

On the other side were the Almoravids. They were a strong army with both cavalry (soldiers on horseback) and infantry (soldiers on foot).

Where Did the Battle Happen?

The battle took place near a town called Montiel in a region known as La Mancha. This area is in central Spain.

Before the battle, Muño Alfonso and his 900 knights and 1,000 foot soldiers had gone on a raid near Córdoba. On their way back, they saw the Almoravid army chasing them. Muño Alfonso decided to turn and face them near the castle of Calatrava. Some old records say the battle was near a river called Adoro. This might have been the Azuer river near Montiel or the Algodor river near Mora.

What Happened in the Battle?

The battle was very fierce. Muño Alfonso's army fought bravely against the Almoravids. It was a decisive win for the Christian forces.

The Battle's Outcome

The Christian army won a great victory. Many important Almoravid leaders were killed, including the emirs (rulers) of Seville and Granada.

After the battle, the winning army took a lot of valuable things. This included gold, silver, fancy clothes, animals, weapons, and even some prisoners. They marched back to Toledo, carrying all the treasures.

After the Victory

To celebrate their win, the heads of the two emirs and other Almoravid commanders were put on spears and shown around the city of Toledo. Muño Alfonso then ordered them to be hung from the city towers.

However, Empress Berenguela had a different idea. She ordered the heads to be taken down. She then had Jewish and Muslim doctors prepare them with special oils and send them back to Córdoba. This was so the widows of the fallen leaders could receive them. This act showed respect even for their enemies.
