The Battle of Rhandeia was an important battle that happened in the year 62 AD. It was fought between the powerful Roman Empire and a combined army from Armenia and Parthia. The Roman forces were led by a general named Lucius Caesennius Paetus. However, they were defeated by the Armenian-Parthian army, which was led by Tiridates I of Armenia. This battle was a big moment in the history of these ancient empires.

What Caused the Battle?

This battle happened because of a disagreement over who should rule Armenia. Armenia was a kingdom located between the Roman and Parthian empires. Both empires wanted to have control over Armenia.

A New King for Armenia

The Parthians decided to make Tiridates their choice for King of Armenia. He was the brother of the Parthian king, Vologases I. This was a problem for the Romans because the previous king, Tigranes, was an ally of Rome.

Rome Fights Back

The Romans did not like this change. They wanted to put their own ally back on the throne of Armenia. So, they sent an army to fight the Parthians and Armenians. The goal was to take back control of the Armenian kingdom.

The Battle and Its Outcome

The two armies met at a place called Rhandeia in the autumn of 62 AD. The fighting was intense, but the Roman army was eventually forced to surrender. This was a major victory for Armenia and Parthia.

The Treaty of Rhandeia

After the battle, a peace treaty was signed. This treaty allowed Tiridates to remain King of Armenia. However, he had to travel to Rome and receive his crown from the Roman Emperor Nero. This showed that while Armenia was ruled by a Parthian prince, it still had some connection to the Roman Empire. This agreement helped bring peace to the region for a while.
