The Battle of Tecualoya was an important fight during the Mexican War of Independence. It happened from January 17 to 20, 1812. This battle took place in the deep canyons near Tecualoya, in what is now the State of Mexico.
This conflict was between two main groups. One group was the royalist forces. These were soldiers loyal to the King of Spain. The other group was the Mexican rebels, also called insurgents. They were fighting for Mexico's freedom from the Spanish Empire.
General Hermenegildo Galeana led the Mexican rebels. The Spanish forces were commanded by Rosendo Porlier y Asteguieta. In the end, the Spanish loyalists won this battle.
What Happened at Tecualoya?
The Battle of Tecualoya was a tough loss for General Galeana and his rebel army. During the fighting, the Mexican rebels lost all their artillery. Artillery means large guns, like cannons, used in warfare. Losing these was a big setback for them.
However, the rebels did not give up. They managed to get their cannons back later. This happened during another important fight called the Battle of Tenancingo. In that battle, a Spanish general named José María Oviedo was killed.
