The Battle of Tenancingo: A Key Victory
The battle began after some earlier fights in the area. Before reaching Tenancingo, the Spanish commander, Rosendo Porlier y Asteguieta, had a victory. He defeated the rebel forces led by Hermenegildo Galeana at the Battle of Tecualoya. After this win, Porlier's army marched towards Tenancingo.
Morelos Arrives to Help
Porlier's army was in a good position to take over Tenancingo. However, he did not enter the town right away. Meanwhile, General José María Morelos y Pavón received urgent messages asking for help. These messages came from nearby towns like Tenango del Valle and Heroica Zitácuaro.
Morelos quickly moved his forces from the south to Tenancingo. When he arrived, his army was ready to fight the Spanish forces.
A Fierce Fight and Rebel Win
The battle that followed was very tough and lasted a long time. Both sides fought bravely. In the end, General Morelos's army proved to be stronger and won the battle. This victory was a major boost for the Mexican rebels.
After the battle, Morelos had planned to continue his march towards Mexico City. However, he received bad news. The rebels had suffered a big loss at the Battle of Zitácuaro. Also, the rebel government, called the "Suprema Junta Nacional Gubernativa" (Supreme National Governing Board), had to flee from Zitácuaro. Because of this, Morelos decided to stop his advance on Mexico City. The rebel forces needed time to reorganize after their defeat.
