A Glimpse into Bauta Abajo's Past
The history of Bauta Abajo is connected to the larger story of Puerto Rico. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under the rules of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States.
Soon after, in 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count, called a census, found that 1,603 people lived in Bauta Abajo barrio at that time.
