Bay Port is a small community in Huron County, Michigan, in the United States. It is an unincorporated community, meaning it does not have its own local government. However, it does have its own post office. In 2020, about 464 people lived in Bay Port. It is also called a census-designated place (CDP) by the U.S. Census Bureau.
History
Bay Port was first settled in 1851 by Carl H. Heisterman. It was originally called "Geneva." Later, its name changed to "Wild Fowl Port." The post office moved to Bay Port in 1872.
The Bay Port Historic Commercial Fishing District is an important area in the community. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a place with special historical value.
Geography
Bay Port is located on the shores of Saginaw Bay. This bay is part of Lake Huron, one of the Great Lakes. The community covers an area of about 3.37 square miles (8.70 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small amount of water.
Most of Bay Port is in Fairhaven Township. A very small part is in McKinley Township.
Major Highways
- M-25 is a highway that runs through Bay Port. It follows the coastline of Lake Huron.
- M-142 is another highway that starts in Bay Port. It is known locally as Pigeon Road. This road goes east across the county.
Events
Each year, Bay Port hosts a special event called the Fish Sandwich Festival. This festival takes place during the first full weekend of August. Bay Port's unofficial motto is "Where the fish caught the man." This motto shows how important fishing is to the community. It also highlights its easy access to the lake for sport fishermen.

In 2020, the population of Bay Port was 464 people. Most of the people living in Bay Port are white, making up about 96.22% of the population. The next largest group is Asian people, at 2.29%. Native Americans make up less than one percent of the population.
Notable People
- Sanford A. Brown (1909–1986) was a well-known person from Bay Port. He served as the Michigan State Treasurer. This means he was in charge of the state's money.
