Bayside is a small community in Humboldt County, California. It's not a city, but an unincorporated community. This means it's a place with homes and businesses that isn't officially part of a city. Bayside is about 2.25 miles (3.6 km) south-southeast of Arcata. It sits at an elevation of 33 feet (10 meters) above sea level.
The area's ZIP Code is 95524, and its phone area code is 707. Long ago, giant Coast Redwood trees covered Bayside. These huge trees grew all the way to the edge of what was then a much larger Humboldt Bay. Because of these massive redwoods, Bayside became a key spot for early logging operations. There was also a rock quarry in the nearby hills. This quarry provided rock for projects like building the Humboldt Bay jetties. Today, Bayside is mostly a rural area with homes and small ranches. It helps keep Arcata separate from the city of Eureka. You can still see some old Victorian-style houses along Old Arcata Road. This road was once the main route connecting Arcata to Eureka. Jacoby Creek, a local stream, flows through the area.

Discovering Bayside's Past
Before white settlers arrived in the 1850s, Wiyot Indian villages were common in the Bayside area. The main roads we see today were originally trails used by the Wiyot people. The first white settlers in Bayside were members of the Quear family.
Who Was Jacoby Creek Named After?
Jacoby Creek was first called "Jacoby River." It was named after an early settler named Augustus Jacoby. He owned a brick store in Arcata that offered safety to settlers during difficult times. Jacoby also owned a large rock quarry about 5 miles southeast of Bayside. This quarry produced limestone rock used for building projects, including the Humboldt Bay jetties. Augustus Jacoby later moved to New York and passed away in 1892.
Bayside's Logging History
William Carson, a famous logger, started his first logging business in Bayside. He brought workers from New Brunswick, Canada to settle in the area. Bayside was rich in redwood timber, and part of the community became known as "Stump Town" because of all the tree stumps. In 1907, a huge pile of logs and debris from logging operations broke loose in Jacoby Creek. This caused the creek to create a new path and flooded about 80 acres (32 hectares) of dairy farmland.
Community Milestones
Bayside got its first post office in 1886. Even with its own post office, parts of Bayside were later added to the City of Arcata. The Jacoby Creek School was built in 1903. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 because of its historical importance. The Bayside Grange was built in 1941. It was a meeting hall for farmers and is still used today for community events.

You'll also find the Bayside Temperance Hall, which was built in 1882, nearby. Another important road is Golf Course Road. This road leads to a full-size golf course located at the top of a hill.
