Bazilije Stjepan Pandžić (born January 30, 1918 – died April 16, 2019) was a famous Bosnian historian, archivist, and orientalist. This means he studied history, took care of old documents, and learned about Eastern cultures. He joined the Franciscan Order (a group of Catholic priests) in 1935. He became a priest in 1941.

From 1947 to 1985, he was the main archivist for the Franciscan Order in Rome. This was a very important job! He also became a vice-president of an international group for church archives in 1958. Bazilije Pandžić lived a very long life. He turned 100 years old in January 2018 and passed away in April 2019, at the age of 101.

Bazilije Pandžić was born on January 30, 1918. His hometown was Drinovci, in what is now Bosnia and Herzegovina. At that time, it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His family was Roman Catholic and part of the Croat people in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

He went to elementary school in Drinovci, finishing in 1929. Then, he went to high school in Široki Brijeg. After high school, he joined the Franciscan Order in Humac.

His Education and Studies

Bazilije started studying philosophy and theology in Mostar. He became a priest in 1941. He then continued his studies in Rome in 1942. In 1945, he earned his doctorate degree in theology. This means he became an expert in religious studies.

Later, in 1947, he studied archive science and paleography at the Vatican School. These studies taught him how to understand and care for very old documents and handwriting. He also earned another doctorate degree in philosophy in 1951. This time, he focused on Islamic Sciences, learning Arabic, Persian, and Turkish.

His Work as an Archivist

Bazilije Pandžić had a big dream to research old Ottoman records in Istanbul. He wanted to learn more about the history of Bosnia, Herzegovina, and other nearby regions. However, in 1947, he was given a very important job. He became the general archivist for the Franciscan Order in Rome. He kept this job until 1985.

As an archivist, he traveled to many international meetings. He went to places like Paris, Moscow, and Florence. He also helped publish important journals. In 1967, he wrote a book called Archivistica ecclesiastica. This book shared his knowledge and experiences about managing church archives.

Bazilije spent most of his career researching in the Vatican archives. He published many scientific books and articles. He wrote in several languages, including Latin, Croatian, and Italian. His works were published all over the world.

Important Historical Projects

He helped continue a huge historical project called Annales Minorum. This project records the history of the Franciscan Order. He also worked on the fourth volume of Historia missionum Ordinis Fratrum Minorum. This book is about the history of Franciscan missions in the Middle East and Balkan areas.

Bazilije also worked for the "Congregation for the Saints." This group helps decide if someone should become a saint. He prepared special historical reports about people who were being considered for sainthood. For example, his work helped Pope Paul VI make Nicholas Tavelić a saint in 1970.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1970, Bazilije Pandžić helped start a publishing house called ZIRAL. He also helped create the Croatian Historical Institute in Rome. After returning to his homeland, he continued to participate in scientific meetings. He also wrote for various journals.

From 1995, he lived in Zagreb and kept up his research. He published several more books, including a three-volume work called Acta Franciscana Hercegovinae. He also wrote Herzegovinian Franciscans: Seven centuries with the people. In total, his collected scientific works fill about 10,000 pages! He truly dedicated his life to history and preserving knowledge.
