The Bazin River is a river in Quebec, Canada. It starts in the La Tuque area of Mauricie. The river then flows into the Gatineau River. This happens in the Laurentides region, near Lac-Oscar.

River Journey

The Bazin River begins at Lac-l'Ours-Blanc, which is about 435 metres (1,427 ft) (1,427 feet) high. This lake is in the La Tuque area. The lake is about 4.5 kilometres (2.8 mi) (2.8 miles) long and has three parts.

The river flows south from the lake. It goes through a marshy area. Then it reaches the north shore of Raoul Lake. The river continues south for about 2.4 kilometres (1.5 mi) (1.5 miles). It then flows to the north-east shore of Lake Tremblay. This lake is about 8.1 kilometres (5.0 mi) (5 miles) long.

The river goes around the village of Parent to the west. Here, you can find a series of rapids. From there, the river flows west. It meets the Marte River, which comes from the north. The Bazin River then turns south. It picks up water from Pitchpine Brook, which comes from the west.

The Bazin River is about 124 kilometres (77 mi) (77 miles) long. It winds through the forest. First, it flows south. Along its path, the river widens to include Raoul Lake and Du-Tremblay Lake. Later, it turns west near Parent. Finally, the river changes direction again, flowing south and then southwest. The Bazin River ends by joining the Gatineau River. This meeting point is about 27 kilometres (17 mi) (17 miles) northwest of Judge Bay.

River's Name

The Bazin River flows through an area called the Bazin canton. The river is named after a French writer named René Bazin. He was born in Angers, France, in 1853 and passed away in Paris in 1932.

In the spring of 1912, René Bazin visited Quebec City. He was part of a special group called the Champlain Mission. He also attended the first congress for the French language in Canada in June 1912. Bazin was very impressed by the beauty of Quebec City. He called it "The most beautiful water crossroads of the world." He also praised the people living in the countryside of Quebec.

On September 1, 1912, Bazin wrote an article about his trip to Quebec City for a magazine called "Revue des Deux Mondes." He had written about Canada before, in his 1884 novel "Aunt Giron." In 1910, he wrote a book called "La Douce France." In this book, he tried to inspire young French people to be proud of their country. His books were very popular in French-speaking Canada. Many students in schools at that time read his work.

The name "Bazin River" first appeared on maps in 1929. Before that, the river had different names. In 1908, it was known as the "Gatineau North East River." In 1914, it was simply called the "Gatineau River."

The official name "Bazin River" was formally approved on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which keeps track of place names in Quebec.
