Illinois Beach State Park: A Natural Treasure
Beach Park is home to the southern part of Illinois Beach State Park. This park is a special place that protects the natural beauty of the Lake Michigan shoreline.
History of the Park
The area was once called Camp Logan. It was used as a rifle range by the Illinois National Guard starting in 1892. During World War I and World War II, it helped train soldiers from the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. The rifle range was closed in 1973.
In 1950, a group called the Illinois Dunes Preservation Society worked to keep the beach natural. With help from the Illinois Department of Conservation, the southern part of the beach became the state's first natural preserve. The northern part was added between 1971 and 1982.
What You Can Find at the Park
Today, the south beach area has the Illinois Beach Resort and Conference Center. The North Point Marina is at the north beach. This is the newest and largest marina in Illinois. It is also the largest freshwater marina in the entire United States!
More than 650 types of plants grow in the sand dunes here. This includes many kinds of colorful wildflowers. On May 9, 2000, the park and marina were named the Cullerton Complex. This was to honor William J. Cullerton, Sr.. He was a war hero and loved protecting nature.

These deputies can get help from other police departments nearby if there's a big emergency. The village even lets the deputies use the Village Hall as a small office. This means deputies can stay in the area more often.
Fire and emergency medical services (EMS) are provided 24/7 by three fire protection districts: Beach Park, Winthrop Harbor, and Newport Township. The Beach Park Fire Protection District covers most of the village. These districts work together through "Auto Aid Agreements." This means they automatically send help to each other when needed.
The fire departments are also part of the MABAS Mutual Aid program. This program helps them get assistance from other areas, even across the country, if a large emergency happens. The Beach Park Fire Protection District has also improved its services. They now have full-time firefighters and paramedics. This has helped lower the village's fire insurance rating, which can save residents money on their home insurance. They are also getting newer fire equipment to keep residents safe.
