It's actually two separate areas that stretch from Brighton Marina all the way to Beachy Head near Eastbourne. There's a small gap in the middle near Newhaven, where the River Ouse meets the sea. This important zone covers about 24 square kilometers (about 9 square miles) of the seabed.

What is a Marine Conservation Zone?

A Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ) is a protected area in the sea. It's like a national park, but underwater! These zones are created to protect important marine wildlife and habitats. They help make sure that special places in our oceans stay healthy for future generations. Beachy Head West became an MCZ on November 21, 2013.

Why is Beachy Head West Special?

This area is very important because it has some of the best examples of underwater chalk habitat in the south-east of England. Imagine cliffs and hills, but under the sea! These chalk areas form reefs and gullies.

Unique Underwater Chalk Reefs

The chalk reefs and gullies here are home to many different kinds of animals and seaweeds. These creatures are specially adapted to live in this unique environment. It's like a hidden city under the waves, full of life!

Amazing Marine Life

One of the most exciting animals you might find here is the rare short-snouted seahorse. These amazing creatures use their tails to hold onto seaweed. They are just one example of the special wildlife that calls this MCZ home. Protecting this area helps these animals thrive.
