Her Early Life and Family
Beatrix Lehmann was born in Bourne End, Buckinghamshire. She was the third of four children. Her family was full of creative people. Her father, Rudolph Chambers Lehmann, was a well-known author and publisher.
Her great-uncle, Henri Lehmann, was a famous artist. Beatrix also had a brother named John Lehmann, who was a publisher. One of her older sisters, Rosamond Lehmann, became a successful novelist.
Her Career in Acting and Writing
Beatrix Lehmann studied acting at the RADA. She first appeared on stage in 1924. This was in a play called The Way of the World. It was shown at the Lyric Hammersmith theatre.
Beatrix also acted in many films and television shows. She wrote short stories and two novels. One of her novels was Rumour of Heaven, published in 1934. In 1946, she became a director and producer. She worked for the Arts Council Midland Theatre Company.
Awards and Notable Roles
In 1977, Beatrix Lehmann was named Britain's Radio Actress of the Year. She played many interesting characters. In 1962, she was Bernadette Amorelle in a Maigret TV episode.
She also appeared in science fiction shows. She played Susan Calvin in "The Prophet" (1967). This was an episode of Out of the Unknown. She was also Professor Emilia Rumford in the Doctor Who series The Stones of Blood (1978). In 1978, she played Mrs. Pleasant in the film The Cat and The Canary.
