Beatriz Galindo, also known as La Latina, was a very smart Spanish writer and teacher. She lived from about 1465 to 1535. She taught Queen Isabella of Castile and her children. Beatriz was one of the most educated women of her time. The La Latina neighborhood in Madrid is named after her.

Her Early Life and Education

Beatriz Galindo was born in Salamanca, Spain. Her family was part of the lower nobility. They were not as wealthy as they used to be.

Her family thought she might become a nun. She loved to read. So, they let her study grammar at a school linked to the University of Salamanca. This was to help her prepare for a religious life.

But Beatriz showed amazing skill in Latin. She was so good that she started an academic career before she was twelve years old. She might have even been a student of the famous Spanish scholar Antonio de Nebrija.

Teaching Queens and Writing

Beatriz was nicknamed La Latina because she was so good at Latin. She became a special tutor to the children of Queen Isabella of Castile.

She taught five queens in total! These included Queen Isabella herself. She also taught Isabella's daughters, Isabella and Maria, who both became queens of Portugal. Beatriz also taught Catherine of Aragon, who later married Henry VIII of England. And she taught Joanna of Castile, who became known as Juana the Mad.

Beatriz wrote many things in Latin. She wrote poetry and a special book explaining the ideas of Aristotle.

In December 1491, she married Francisco Ramirez de Madrid. He was an important royal adviser. They had two children together.

Her Public Life and Legacy

Beatriz Galindo was one of the first women to be active in public life during the Renaissance. The Renaissance was a time of great new ideas and art.

It is said that she often dressed like a nun. In 1506, she started the Hospital of the Holy Cross (Santa Cruz de Madrid) in Madrid. This hospital still exists today. She passed away in Madrid when she was about 70 years old.

The neighborhood in Madrid where she once lived is now called La Latina. This name comes from her famous nickname. There are also statues of her in Salamanca and Madrid. A secondary school in Madrid and an elementary school in Salamanca are named after her.

Her story even inspired a novel! The book Falling Pomegranate Seeds: The Duty of Daughters by Wendy J. Dunn is based on her life.
