Beatriz Liliana Rojkés de Alperovich (born February 4, 1956) is an Argentine politician, speech therapist, and businesswoman. She was elected to the Argentine Senate in 2009. In 2011, she made history by becoming the first woman and first Jewish person to be named the Provisional President of the Senate. This important role meant she was second in line to become President of Argentina, after the Vice President.
Early Life and Education
Beatriz Liliana Rojkés was born in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina. Her parents, Luisa Werblud and Salomón Rojkés, came from Europe. Her father started a textile (fabric) factory called Textil Americana.
Beatriz studied Psychopedagogy, which is about how people learn and develop. She married José Alperovich, who was also from the Jewish community in Tucumán. They have four children together.
Political Career and Public Service
In 1997, Beatriz became a partner in her father-in-law's car dealership, León Alperovich de Tucumán S.A.. By 2010, she owned most of the company, which was one of the biggest car dealerships in Tucumán.
When her husband, José Alperovich, became Governor of Tucumán in 2003, Beatriz also entered politics. In 2005, she was elected to the Argentine Chamber of Deputies. This is like one part of Argentina's parliament. While there, she worked on many new laws to help with children's rights, women's rights, and better nutrition for people.
In 2009, she was elected to the Argentine Senate, which is the other part of Argentina's parliament. She joined important committees that dealt with things like the country's laws, labor, health, and public complaints.
On November 30, 2011, Beatriz Rojkés was chosen as the Provisional President of the Senate. This was a very important moment because she was the first woman and the first Jewish person to hold this high position in Argentina's government. The Provisional President of the Senate is second in line to become President of Argentina if something happens to the President and Vice President. She supported the government's policies and was proud to serve in this role. In February 2014, she was replaced by Gerardo Zamora in this position.
