Beaverlick is a small, quiet place in Boone County, Kentucky, in the United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger county. Beaverlick is located near two important roads, U.S. Route 42 and U.S. Route 127. It is about 4.5 miles (7.2 km) west of Walton.
Early History of Beaverlick
The area where Beaverlick is now was first used for fur trading between 1780 and 1820. This means people traded animal furs there. The community itself started in the early 1800s.
A post office, where people could send and receive mail, opened in Beaver Lick in 1854. John Tucker was the first postmaster. This post office served the community for many years but eventually closed in 1944.
What's in a Name?
The name "Beaverlick" comes from its location. It is found at the start of the Beaver Branch of Big Bone Creek. The community's name was originally spelled as two words, "Beaver Lick," but it changed to one word, "Beaverlick," around 1895.
Growing and Changing
After it was first settled, Beaverlick slowly grew into a small village. It had several important businesses and services for its residents. These included:
- a general store, where people could buy everyday items
- two blacksmiths, who worked with metal
- a carriage maker, who built vehicles
- two physicians, who were doctors
- a hotel, for travelers
- a flour mill, which ground grain into flour
- a millinery shop, which made and sold hats
- three churches, for religious gatherings
At the end of the 1800s, about 50 people lived in Beaverlick. Over time, the number of people living there became smaller. Today, not much is left of the original village. However, you can still find historic houses, churches, and cemeteries that show its past.
Beaverlick is also part of the larger Cincinnati metropolitan area. This means it's connected to the bigger cities and towns around Cincinnati.
