Becky Cloonan (born on June 23) is a super talented American artist and writer. She is famous for creating awesome comic books. You might know her work from publishers like Tokyopop and Vertigo. In 2012, she made history! She became the very first female artist to draw the main Batman comic book series for DC Comics.

Early Life and Art School

Becky Cloonan was born in a beautiful city called Pisa, in Italy. When she was older, she moved to New York City in the United States. There, she went to a special art school called the School of Visual Arts. This is where she learned many of the skills she uses today to create amazing comics.

Starting Her Comic Book Journey

Becky Cloonan began her career by working with friends. They created a collection of comics together called Meathaus. This was a great way for them to share their stories and art.

Early Collaborations and Awards

Becky started by making small, independent comics called minicomics. She was part of the Meathaus group. Later, she teamed up with writer Brian Wood. Together, they created Channel Zero: Jennie One in 2003.

Her work became more and more popular. One of her most well-known projects is the twelve-issue comic series Demo. She also worked on this series with Brian Wood in 2004. Wizard magazine even called Demo the "Indie of the Year" in 2004. The series was also nominated for two big awards, called Eisner Awards, in 2005.

First Solo Graphic Novel

In 2006, Becky Cloonan released her first graphic novel that she created all by herself. It was called East Coast Rising Volume 1. This book was published by Tokyopop. East Coast Rising: Volume 1 earned Becky her third Eisner Award nomination in 2007. This time, it was for "Best New Series."

She also worked with writer Steven T. Seagle on a series for Vertigo Comics. This series was called American ....

Making History with Batman

A very important moment in Becky's career happened in 2012. She became the first woman ever to draw the main Batman comic book series. This was a huge step forward for female artists in the comic book world!

Recent Works and Recognition

Becky Cloonan continues to create exciting comics. In 2013, she drew the art for a series called The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. This series was written by Gerard Way and Shaun Simon.

Gotham Academy and Top Rankings

From 2014 to 2015, Becky also helped create and draw covers and stories for a comic series called Gotham Academy from DC Comics. Her talent was recognized in 2015 when she was voted #3 among the top 50 female comic artists of all time. She was also one of only two creators to be ranked highly as both a writer and an artist. She was voted #14 among all-time top writers!

Public Art and New Series

In 2017, Becky Cloonan participated in a festival called Pow! Wow! Worcester. This festival brought large public murals to buildings in Worcester, Massachusetts. Becky painted her own mural on the building that houses a comic shop called That's Entertainment.

In July 2021, DC Comics announced that Becky Cloonan would be a co-writer for a new series called Batgirls. This series focuses on Barbara Gordon helping two other characters, Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown. The first issue came out on December 14, 2021, and received good reviews.

In 2024, Becky Cloonan won another Eisner Award for "Best New Series." This was for her work with Tula Lotay on a comic called Somna: A Bed Time Story, published by DSTLRY.
