His grandmother, Elena Lee Rush, was a big inspiration for him. She taught him to sing, paint, and perform from a young age. He has said that she taught him "everything I know." When he was in elementary school, the band Bon Jovi helped him discover his love for music.

My Chemical Romance Years (2001–2013)
As teenagers, Gerard and his brother Mikey Way were inspired by many artists. These included Iron Maiden, The Misfits, Queen, and The Smiths. Gerard first wanted to be a guitarist. His grandmother bought him his first guitar when he was eight. He played in small bands like Ray Gun Jones. However, he decided to focus on his art career instead.
Way was working in New York City during the events of September 11, 2001. Seeing what happened made him change his outlook on life. He decided he needed to "make a difference."
