The Story of Black Veil Brides
How the Band Began (2006–2009)
Black Veil Brides first formed in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 2006. The original members were Andy Biersack, Johnny Herold, and Phil Cennedella. Andy later moved to Los Angeles, California.
In early 2009, he started a new band. He kept the name Black Veil Brides. This new group included Andy, guitarist Chris Hollywood, and drummer Sandra Alvarenga. Bassist Ashley Purdy and guitarist Pan the Gypsy soon joined them. They signed with an independent record label called StandBy Records. Chris Hollywood and Pan the Gypsy later left the band. Jinxx and Jake Pitts took their places.
Ashley Purdy explained the band's name. He said "Black Veil Brides" is a term from the Roman Catholic Church. It describes a woman who gives up worldly pleasures to serve God. She becomes a "Black Veil Bride." Purdy felt this was like a rock band. You give up many things to follow your passion. The name also shows a mix of happy and sad. Getting married is happy, but a funeral is sad. This fit well for a dark and heavy rock band.
The band quickly started writing music for a tour and an album. In December 2009, they went on their first US tour. It was called "On Leather Wings."
First Album Success (2009–2010)

The band's first album, We Stitch These Wounds, came out on July 20, 2010. It sold over 10,000 copies in its first week. The album reached No. 36 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. It was also No. 1 on the Billboard Independent chart. Soon after the album's release, Christian "CC" Coma replaced Sandra Alvarenga as drummer. In late 2010, Black Veil Brides toured with bands like The Birthday Massacre.
Black Veil Brides caught the attention of Lava Records president Jason Flom. He heard about the band's growing popularity. Their T-shirts were selling very well at Hot Topic stores. What was even more impressive was how they built their fan base. They did it themselves, even making their own music videos. When Flom heard their music and met them, he knew they were special. He said they were "rock heroes that are truly larger than life." He added, "They have great songs, great playing." Flom then made a deal to sign the band to Lava Records.
Black Veil Brides supported the Murderdolls on the "God Save The Scream Tour" in 2011. They also toured America on the AP Tour from March to May. The band then joined the Vans Warped Tour in June 2011. However, on June 18, Andy fell during a show. He broke his ribs, so they missed the first week of the tour. The band also played at big festivals. These included the Download Festival in the UK and Bamboozle. They also performed at the Rock am Ring festival in Germany.
In April 2011, the band won the "Best New Artist" award from Revolver Magazine. They also won "Best Newcomers" from Kerrang! magazine.
New Albums and Tours (2011–2012)
The band's second album, Set the World on Fire, was released on June 14, 2011. The album's title song was planned for the movie Transformers: Dark of the Moon.
A preview of the album's first single, "Fallen Angels", came out in April. It was fully released in the UK on May 1. The next single was "The Legacy". Its music video premiered on YouTube on June 6, 2011. Their third single was "Rebel Love Song". Its music video was released on YouTube on October 19.
On October 25, the band had to cancel some tour dates. This was because Andy broke his nose during a performance. He hit it on the drum set platform. Even with the injury, he finished the show. Doctors told him to rest for a few weeks. They announced they would return to tour with Avenged Sevenfold on the Buried Alive Tour.
Andy announced on Twitter that they would release an EP called "Rebels". An EP is a shorter album. They released a video showing Andy recording vocals for their cover of "Rebel Yell" by Billy Idol. This song was on the EP. Another video shared more details about the EP. The final video, released on November 14, explained the song "Coffin." This song was left over from the Set the World on Fire album.
In an interview, they hinted at a guest guitarist on the EP. It turned out to be Zakk Wylde (from Ozzy Osbourne's band). He played the guitar solo on their cover of "Unholy" by Kiss. Rebels was released on December 13, 2011.
Wretched and Divine and a Movie (2012–2013)
A Black Veil Brides song called "Unbroken" was on the soundtrack for The Avengers movie. It came out on May 1, 2012. On June 13, the music video for "Coffin" from the Rebels EP was released.
Guitarists Jinxx and Jake Pitts said the band was always writing new music. They planned to record their next album in April 2012. On February 18, Jake tweeted that the new record would be amazing. In a February 2012 interview, Ashley Purdy said the third album would be out by the end of 2012.
On May 2, Black Veil Brides announced they had started recording their new album. They planned to release it on October 30. Andy said they had 20 to 25 songs written. He described it as more of a punk rock record. On September 4, Andy announced the album recording was finished.

The release of their third album was moved to January 2013. On October 8, the album title was announced: Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones. Pre-orders started on Halloween, October 31. Richard Villa, who often painted their album covers, created the art for Wretched and Divine.
The first single from Wretched and Divine, "In the End", was a theme song for WWE's Hell in a Cell. The band planned "The Church of the Wild Ones" North American Tour to support the album. On October 29, the band shared the official song list and the new release date (January 8, 2013).
On October 31, a video trailer was released. It showed that Black Veil Brides planned a full-length movie. It was called Legion of the Black. This movie was a visual story of the album. The movie was shown in Los Angeles in December 2012. Andy Biersack surprised fans by appearing at the showings. Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones reached number 7 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.
Black Veil Brides played on the Warped Tour from June to August 2013. On June 11, 2013, they released the Wretched and Divine Ultimate Edition. This version included three new songs and the Legion of the Black DVD. The band won many awards in the 2013 Alternative Press Readers Poll.
New Music and Member Changes (2013–2019)
Andy Biersack said the band decided to work on their fourth album. They wanted to "do something we've never really done before." He felt they were in the right place after making the story-based Wretched and Divine album. Andy also said they would likely finish the album in the summer of 2014. Black Veil Brides won a Golden God Award for "In the End". It won "song of the year."
The band's fourth album, called Black Veil Brides, was released on October 28, 2014. In July 2014, they announced pre-orders for the album. The band headlined a tour in America called "The Black Mass." Other bands like Falling in Reverse supported them.
The first song from the album, "Heart of Fire," was played on BBC Radio 1 on September 7, 2014. Another new song, "Faithless," was released on YouTube. On October 6, 2014, the music video for "Heart of Fire" came out. The music video for "Goodbye Agony" was released on October 31, 2014. From October 18 to October 27, short clips of new songs were released daily on YouTube.

Musical Style and Influences
Black Veil Brides' music fits into many rock genres. These include hard rock, alternative metal, metalcore, glam metal, gothic metal, and heavy metal. They also have elements of gothic rock, emo, post-hardcore, and shock rock.
The band is influenced by many artists. Some of these are Marilyn Manson, Kiss, Metallica, Pantera, Avenged Sevenfold, Mötley Crüe, and Poison. Christian Coma said his drumming was influenced by Joey Jordison from Slipknot.
How Their Style Changed
Black Veil Brides' style has changed since 2006. When guitarist Jake Pitts joined, guitar solos became common. Their first album, We Stitch These Wounds, was mostly metalcore. With Set the World on Fire, their look became more like glam metal bands. Their sound changed too, moving away from screams to cleaner vocals. They kept this style up to Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones.
The classical music influence of Jinxx (who plays violin and cello) is clear on Wretched and Divine. It has many orchestral parts. The album also has their first instrumental song, "Overture," with Jinxx playing violins. The band describes their own music as simply rock 'n' roll.
What Their Songs Are About
Black Veil Brides' lyrics often talk about feeling like an outsider. Their former bassist, Ashley Purdy, explained the band's message. He said they want people to believe in themselves. They want listeners to know that no one should tell them what to do. The band supports those who feel different or unique. They encourage people to stand up for themselves. They want fans to have fun and live their lives how they choose.
