Black Veil Brides is an American rock band. They are from Hollywood, California. The band started in 2006 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Today, the band members are:

  • Andy Biersack (lead singer)
  • Jinxx (rhythm guitarist and violinist)
  • Jake Pitts (lead guitarist)
  • Christian "CC" Coma (drummer)
  • Lonny Eagleton (bassist)

Black Veil Brides are famous for their unique look. They use black makeup, body paint, and wear tight, black, studded clothes. They also have long hair. This style was inspired by bands like Kiss and Mötley Crüe from the 1980s.

The Band's Journey

How Black Veil Brides Started (2006–2009)

Black Veil Brides first formed in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 2006. The original members were Andy Biersack (who used the name Andy Six back then), Johnny Herold, and Phil Cennedella.

Later, Andy moved to Los Angeles, California. In early 2009, he started a new band with the name Black Veil Brides. This new group included Andy, guitarist Chris Hollywood, and drummer Sandra Alvarenga. Soon, bassist Ashley Purdy and guitarist Pan the Gypsy joined them. They signed with an independent music company called StandBy Records.

Chris Hollywood and Pan the Gypsy later left the band. Jinxx and Jake Pitts took their places.

Ashley Purdy explained what "Black Veil Brides" means. He said it's a term from the Roman Catholic Church. It describes a woman who joins the church and gives up worldly pleasures to focus on God. She becomes a "Black Veil Bride." Purdy felt this was similar to a rock band. You give up many things to follow your passion. The name also mixes happy and sad ideas. Getting married is happy, but a funeral is sad. This fit well for a dark and heavy rock band.

The band immediately started writing songs for a tour and an album. In December 2009, they went on their first US tour, called "On Leather Wings."

We Stitch These Wounds Album (2009–2010)

The band's first album, We Stitch These Wounds, came out on July 20, 2010. It sold over 10,000 copies in its first week! It reached No. 36 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. It also hit No. 1 on the Billboard Independent chart.

Soon after the album was released, Sandra Alvarenga left the band. Christian "CC" Coma became the new drummer. In late 2010, Black Veil Brides toured with bands like The Birthday Massacre.

The band caught the eye of Jason Flom, who was the president of Lava Records. He heard about their growing popularity. Their T-shirt was one of the best-selling at Hot Topic stores. What was even more amazing was that they built their fan base on their own. They made their own music videos without a big label.

When Flom heard their music and met the band, he knew they were special. He said they were bringing back "rock heroes" who were larger than life. He loved their makeup, hair, leather, and most importantly, their great songs and playing. Flom then made a deal to sign the band to Lava Records.

Black Veil Brides supported the Murderdolls on the "God Save The Scream Tour" in 2011. They also toured America on the AP Tour from March to May. The band then joined the Vans Warped Tour in June 2011. However, on June 18, Andy fell during a show and broke his ribs. This made them miss the first week of the tour.

The band also played at big festivals. These included the Download Festival in the UK and Bamboozle. They also performed at the Rock am Ring festival in Germany. In April, the band won the "Best New Artist" award from Revolver Magazine. They also won "Best Newcomers" from Kerrang! magazine.

Set the World on Fire and Rebels (2011–2012)

The band's second album, Set the World on Fire, was released on June 14, 2011. It was put out by Lava Music and Universal Republic Records. The album's cover art came out in April.

The song "Set the World on Fire" was supposed to be in the movie Scream 4. When it wasn't used, the band released a statement and a preview of the song. Later, it was announced that the song would be in the movie Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

A short clip of the album's first single, "Fallen Angels", was released in April. The full song came out in the UK on May 1. The US release was delayed to May 10. It was given for free if you pre-ordered the album on iTunes. Because of the delay, the band released a preview of another song, "Youth and Whisky," on May 3.

The next single from the album was "The Legacy." Its music video came out on YouTube on June 6, 2011. Their third single was "Rebel Love Song." This song also had a music video, released on YouTube on October 19.

On October 25, the band announced they had to cancel some tour dates. This was because Andy broke his nose during a performance. He hit it on the drum set platform. Even with the injury, he finished the show. Doctors told him to rest for a few weeks. The band later announced they would tour with Avenged Sevenfold on the Buried Alive Tour.

Andy announced on Twitter that they would release an EP called "Rebels." A trailer showed Andy recording vocals for their cover of "Rebel Yell" by Billy Idol. This song was on the EP. Another trailer gave more details about the EP. The final trailer, released on November 14, talked about the song "Coffin." This song was left over from the Set the World on Fire album.

In an interview, the band hinted at a guest guitarist on the EP. It turned out to be Zakk Wylde (from Ozzy Osbourne's band and Black Label Society). He played the guitar solo on their cover of "Unholy" by Kiss. The Rebels EP was released on December 13, 2011.

Wretched and Divine Album (2012–2013)

A Black Veil Brides song called "Unbroken" was on the soundtrack for The Avengers movie. It came out on May 1, 2012. This was the only song released by the band just for a movie soundtrack. On June 13, the music video for "Coffin" from the Rebels EP was released.

Guitarists Jinxx and Jake Pitts said the band was always writing new music. They planned to record their next full album in April 2012. In February 2012, Ashley Purdy said the third album would be out by the end of 2012.

On May 2, Black Veil Brides announced they had started recording their new album. They planned to release it on October 30. Andy said at the Download Festival that they had three songs recorded. They aimed to finish by the end of August. They had 20 to 25 songs written and were choosing the best ones. John Feldmann was producing the album. Andy described it as more of a punk rock record, like Social Distortion meets Metallica. On September 4, Andy announced the album recording was finished. He was very happy and proud of it.

The release of their third album was moved from October 30, 2012, to January 2013. On October 8, the album cover and title were revealed. The album was called Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones. Pre-orders started on iTunes on Halloween, October 31. Richard Villa, who often painted Black Veil Brides' album covers, created the art for Wretched and Divine.

The first single from Wretched and Divine, "In the End", was used as a theme song for WWE's Hell in a Cell. The band planned "The Church of the Wild Ones" North American Tour to support the album.

On October 29, the band shared the official song list and the new release date: January 8, 2013. On October 31, a trailer came out. It showed that Black Veil Brides planned to release a full movie called Legion of the Black in 2013. Wretched and Divine is a concept album, meaning it tells a story. The movie showed the story from the album. The movie was shown in Los Angeles in December 2012. Andy Biersack surprised fans by appearing at the showings. Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones reached number 7 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.

Black Veil Brides played on the Warped Tour from June to August 2013. On June 11, 2013, they released the Wretched and Divine Ultimate Edition. This version included three new songs: "Revelation," "Victory Call," and "Let You Down." It also came with the Legion of the Black DVD. The band won 20 awards in the 2013 Alternative Press Readers Poll.

Fourth Album and Vale (2013–2019)

Andy Biersack told Artisan News that the band decided to start working on their fourth album. He said they wanted to "do something we've never really done before." After making the story-based Wretched and Divine album, he felt they became the band they were meant to be. Andy also said they would likely finish the album in the studio by summer 2014.

Black Veil Brides won a Golden God Award for their song "In the End." It won "song of the year" and was a big radio hit.

The band's fourth album, which was self-titled Black Veil Brides, was released on October 28, 2014. In July 2014, they announced pre-orders for the album on PledgeMusic. The band headlined a tour in America called "The Black Mass." Other bands like Falling in Reverse joined them.

The first song from the album, "Heart of Fire," was played on BBC Radio 1 on September 7, 2014. Later that week, another new song, "Faithless," was released on YouTube. On October 6, 2014, the music video for "Heart of Fire" came out. Soon after, on October 31, 2014, the music video for "Goodbye Agony" was released. From October 18 to October 27, short clips of songs from the new album were released daily on the "BlackVeilBridestv" YouTube channel.

On July 10, 2015, Black Veil Brides released their first live DVD/Blu-ray called Alive and Burning. It was filmed at The Wiltern in Los Angeles. It reached #1 on the US and UK Billboard charts.

In November 2015, Andy Biersack said the band was starting to write new music. He noted that once his solo "Andy Black" record was done, they would focus on Black Veil Brides.

On December 21, 2016, Black Veil Brides released "The Outsider," the first single from their new album. The new album, titled Vale, was released on January 12, 2018.

On November 15, 2019, Black Veil Brides announced that bassist Ashley Purdy had left the band. Andy's guitarist, Lonny Eagleton, became the new bassist.

The Phantom Tomorrow and The Mourning (2020–present)

On August 2, 2020, after a live show celebrating the re-recording of We Stitch These Wounds, Jinxx confirmed they were working on a new album. He said they were thinking about making another concept album, like Wretched and Divine. He mentioned they had six strong songs written and were still writing more. Jake Pitts was producing it, and they were recording vocals and guitars at his studio. Jinxx was recording strings at his own studio. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, they were working from home. When they met, it was just the band members. Jinxx was excited for fans to hear their new music.

On November 11, 2020, the band announced The Phantom Tomorrow in an interview with Kerrang!. The first single, "Scarlet Cross," came out on November 13. On April 12, 2021, the band released the second single, "Fields of Bone." They also shared the album cover, song list, and pre-order details. On May 4, the band announced a delay for The Phantom Tomorrow due to production problems from the COVID-19 pandemic. The album's release was moved from June 4, 2021, to October 29, 2021.

"Crimson Skies" was released with an animated lyric video on June 3. The fourth single, "Torch," came out with a music video on August 13. On May 13, 2022, the music video for "Born Again" was released. On August 30, the band announced a new single. On September 6, they released "Saviour II" and its music video. At the same time, they announced their new EP called The Mourning. It was released on October 21, 2022, through Sumerian Records.

Music Style and Influences

Black Veil Brides' music fits into many rock styles. These include hard rock, alternative metal, metalcore, glam metal, gothic metal, and heavy metal. They also have elements of gothic rock, emo, post-hardcore, and shock rock.

The band is influenced by many famous artists. Some of these are Marilyn Manson, Kiss, Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, Mötley Crüe, Poison, AFI, Rob Zombie, David Bowie, and Queen. Christian Coma, the drummer, said his influences include Pendulum and Deadmau5. He also mentioned that former Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison influenced his drumming style.

How Their Style Changed

Black Veil Brides' music style has changed since they started in 2006. When guitarist Jake Pitts joined, guitar solos became a big part of almost every song. Their first album, We Stitch These Wounds, was mostly metalcore.

With Set the World on Fire, their look became more like glam metal and shock rock bands. Their sound changed too. They moved from smooth singing and harsh screams to a cleaner, rougher vocal style, similar to James Hetfield. They kept this style up to Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones.

The classical music influence of Jinxx (who plays rhythm guitar, violin, and cello) is very clear on Wretched and Divine. There are many orchestral parts. The album also has their first instrumental song, "Overture," which features Jinxx playing violins. The band simply calls their music "rock 'n' roll."

Song Meanings

Black Veil Brides' songs often talk about feeling like an outsider. Their former bassist, Ashley Purdy, explained the band's message. He said they want people to believe in themselves. They want listeners to know that no one should tell them what to do. The band supports those who feel different or unique. They encourage people to embrace who they are. Their message is to stand up for yourself, have fun, and live your life how you choose. You only get one life, so make the most of it.
