Lava Records is an American record label, which is a company that helps musicians record and sell their music. It was started by Jason Flom and works with the huge music company Universal Music Group.

The Story of Lava Records

Lava Records was created in 1995 by Jason Flom, who partnered with Atlantic Records. A record label's job is to find new and talented artists and help them become stars. Flom was great at this.

Under his leadership, Lava Records signed many artists who became world-famous. These artists sold over 100 million records around the globe! Some of these big names included Matchbox Twenty, Kid Rock, The Corrs, and Simple Plan. He also signed groups known for their amazing shows, like Blue Man Group and the rock orchestra Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

In 2004, Flom sold Lava Records to Atlantic Records. He then became the Chairman and CEO of Atlantic, which is like being the main boss. He continued to find major artists, including the rock band Paramore.

New Labels and Big Stars

After his success at Atlantic, Flom moved on to become the head of Virgin Records in 2005. He later helped merge it with Capitol Records to form the Capitol Music Group. During his time there, he worked with legendary bands like Coldplay and The Rolling Stones.

Flom has a special talent for spotting future stars. While at Capitol, he helped 11 new artists achieve gold and platinum status, which means they sold a huge number of albums. One of these bands was Thirty Seconds to Mars. In 2007, he signed a new singer named Katy Perry and helped with her first album, One of the Boys, which became a massive hit.

The Return of Lava Records

In 2008, Jason Flom decided to bring back his own label, Lava Records. This time, he partnered with Republic Records, another major player in the music world.

One of his first big signings was Jessie J from the United Kingdom. Her songs "Do It like a Dude" and "Price Tag" reached number one on the music charts in the UK and 17 other countries. Her first album, Who You Are, sold over three million copies.

Discovering Lorde and Greta Van Fleet

In 2013, Flom discovered a young, unknown singer from New Zealand named Lorde. Lava Records released her song "Royals", which was a gigantic success. It was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the U.S. for eight weeks! Lorde even won two Grammy Awards for the song, including the award for Song of the Year.

Lava Records also became a home for rock music. After signing the band Black Veil Brides, Flom found a new rock band called Greta Van Fleet in 2017. They became incredibly popular, with several number-one rock hits and over a million albums sold. Even famous musicians praised them. Robert Plant, the singer of Led Zeppelin, said they sounded like his own band in its early days. Elton John called them one of the biggest new bands of the year. In 2018, Greta Van Fleet won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.

Other Projects by Jason Flom

Besides finding musicians, Jason Flom also started Lava Publishing in 2014. A music publisher helps songwriters get paid when their songs are used. The writers for Lava Publishing include all four members of Greta Van Fleet.

Flom also created a podcast company called Lava for Good. Podcasts are like radio shows you can listen to online. His company has made popular true-crime podcasts that have won awards.
