Nathan Jonas "Joey" Jordison (born April 26, 1975 – died July 26, 2021) was an American musician. He was best known as the original drummer and a co-founder of the heavy metal band Slipknot. In Slipknot, he was known by his number, #1. He also played guitar for the horror punk supergroup Murderdolls.

Joey Jordison grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, with his parents and two sisters. He received his first drum kit when he was 8 years old. He played in many bands early in his career. In 1995, he joined a band called the Pale Ones, which later became Slipknot. Jordison was a part of Slipknot from the very beginning until he left in December 2013. He was the third member to join Slipknot's nine-member lineup. He also founded and was the drummer for Scar the Martyr, a band that started in 2013 and ended in 2016.

With Slipknot, Jordison played on their first four studio albums. He also helped produce their live album 9.0: Live in 2005. Besides his main bands, Jordison played with other famous groups like Rob Zombie, Metallica, Korn, Ministry, Otep, and Satyricon. He was also known for playing drums on recordings for many different artists. At the time of his death, Jordison was playing drums in the blackened death metal supergroup Sinsaenum.

Early Life and First Bands

Jordison was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on April 26, 1975. He had two younger sisters. He grew up in a country area near Waukee. His parents encouraged his love for music from a young age. He played guitar first, but when he was eight, his parents gave him his first drum kit. He started his first band while still in elementary school.

When Jordison was young, his parents divorced. He stayed with his mother. During this time, he formed a band called Modifidious, where he played drums. He described their music as "total speed-metal thrash." This band helped him play live shows, supporting local bands. Modifidious released two demo recordings in 1993.

After school, Jordison worked at a music store and later at a garage. In early 1995, Modifidious broke up. After that, Jordison joined a local band called the Rejects as a guitarist. He also played in a band with his future bandmate Paul Gray.

Career in Music

In November 1995, Joey Jordison was asked to join a new music project called the Pale Ones. He was very interested and quickly became a part of the band. This band later changed its name to Slipknot. Jordison was the third member to join the group. Slipknot became a very important band in the new wave of American heavy metal music.

Each member of Slipknot was given a number, and Joey was "#1". Joey produced one album for Slipknot, the live album 9.0: Live in 2005.

On December 12, 2013, Slipknot announced that Jordison had left the band. Jordison later said that he was actually fired from the band. He said that Slipknot had been his life for 18 years and he would never have left it.

In June 2016, Jordison shared why he left the band. He had a neurological disease called transverse myelitis. This disease made it hard for him to play the drums towards the end of his time with Slipknot.

Murderdolls: His Guitar Project

In 2001, while touring with Slipknot, Jordison met Tripp Eisen. They talked about starting a side project. In 2002, Jordison brought back his old band, The Rejects, and renamed them the Murderdolls. Jordison played guitar in this band. The Murderdolls signed with Roadrunner Records and released an EP called Right to Remain Violent in 2002. Their first full album, Beyond the Valley of the Murderdolls, came out in August 2002. The band used ideas from horror films like Friday the 13th for their song lyrics.

The band got back together in 2010 and released their second album, Women & Children Last. They went on a big tour, but the band eventually split up in 2013.

Scar the Martyr

In April 2013, Jordison started a new band called Scar the Martyr. He played most of the instruments for this project. On May 5, 2016, Jordison announced that this band had ended.

Vimic and Sinsaenum

On May 5, 2016, Jordison announced a new band called Vimic. He later confirmed in 2018 that Vimic was still active.

On May 20, 2016, Jordison also announced another new band called Sinsaenum. This was an extreme metal band. Jordison played drums, and the band released their first album, Echoes of the Tortured, in July 2016. Their second album, Repulsion for Humanity, came out in August 2018.

Other Music Work

Remixing and Playing for Others

In 2001, Jordison worked on a remix of a song called "The Fight Song" by Marilyn Manson. He also appeared in a music video for Marilyn Manson. In 2004, Jordison played drums on six songs for OTEP's album House of Secrets. In 2010, he recorded more songs with Rob Zombie for his album Hellbilly Deluxe 2.

Touring with Other Bands

Jordison also toured with other bands as a temporary drummer. In 2004, when Metallica's drummer Lars Ulrich was sick, Jordison stepped in to play drums for Metallica at the Download Festival. He played on 8 of their 13 songs and was called the band's "hero of the day."

In late 2004, Jordison toured with Satyricon. In 2006, he joined Ministry for their tour across the United States and Canada. He also appeared in their music video for "Lies Lies Lies."

Korn asked Jordison to join them on tour in 2007 when their drummer took a break. He also appeared in Korn's music video for "Evolution." While touring with Korn, Jordison became the first musician to play five times at the Download Festival in England.

Jordison also toured with Rob Zombie for almost a year. He left to focus on the Murderdolls and Slipknot.

Producing Music

In August 2004, Jordison was part of Roadrunner United, a project to celebrate Roadrunner Records' 25th anniversary. He was one of four "team captains" who wrote and produced music for the album. In 2007, the band 3 Inches of Blood asked Jordison to produce their album Fire Up the Blades.

Musical Influences

Jordison said that Keith Moon (from the Who), John Bonham (from Led Zeppelin), Gene Krupa, and Buddy Rich were his main influences. He also mentioned that Lars Ulrich (from Metallica), Charlie Benante (from Anthrax), and Dave Lombardo (from Slayer) greatly influenced his drumming style.

Equipment He Used

Jordison used Pearl drums, hardware, rack systems, pedals, and percussion. He also used Paiste cymbals, Remo Drumheads, Promark drumsticks, ddrum triggers, and Roland electronics.

(Jordison used Orange County Drum and Percussion from 1998-2002, Sabian Cymbals from 1999-2001, and Avedis Zildjian Company in 1999.)

Illness and Death

In a 2016 interview, Jordison spoke about having acute transverse myelitis. This is a neurological disease that affects the spinal cord. Its symptoms started in 2010. The disease caused him to lose the use of his legs for a time, which meant he couldn't play the drums. He worked hard with medical help and physical therapy to recover.

Joey Jordison died peacefully in his sleep on July 26, 2021, at the age of 46. His family announced his death the next day.

Awards and Recognition

In August 2010, readers of Rhythm magazine voted Jordison the best drummer of the previous 25 years. He was chosen over other famous drummers like Mike Portnoy and Neil Peart. He said he was "at a loss for words" and that it reminded him why he continued to play music.

In 2010, Jordison also won the Drummies Award for Best Metal drummer, voted by 6,500 drummers worldwide. In September 2013, Loudwire readers named him the world's greatest metal drummer. In 2016, Jordison received The Golden God Award at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards.

In 2022, Slipknot dedicated their seventh studio album, The End, So Far, to Joey Jordison's memory.
