Bedros Tourian (in Armenian: Պետրոս Դուրեան or Պետրոս Դուրյան) was a talented Armenian poet, playwright, and actor. He was born in Istanbul in 1851 and sadly passed away in 1872, at the young age of 21. Even though his life was short, he left behind many important poems and plays that are still remembered today.
A Short but Bright Life
Bedros Tourian was born into a family that didn't have much money. His father worked as a blacksmith in Istanbul, a big city in what is now Turkey. Bedros was a very sensitive and romantic poet. Many people admired his work during his lifetime. Sadly, he died from a serious illness called tuberculosis when he was only 21.
Despite his short life, Bedros Tourian created a lasting legacy of plays and poems. He was a patriot, meaning he deeply loved his country. His historical plays were inspired by his wish for his nation's freedom. His Armenian school teacher was Hagop Baronian, a famous writer known for his funny and critical stories.
Bedros also learned French and read many books by famous French writers like Hugo and Lamartine. This helped him bring a new, emotional, and beautiful style to Armenian poetry. His poems were natural, powerful, and full of amazing pictures and comparisons. He helped change Armenian writing, moving it away from older styles. Many people believe he started the modern way of writing emotional poems in Armenian. His poems have been translated into many languages, including Russian, French, English, German, and Italian.
His Work in Theatre
Bedros Tourian was also very active in theatre. He wrote plays and performed on stage, even though his father didn't want him to. Since his family was poor, acting might have helped him earn money, which could be why he didn't listen to his father's wishes. He quickly became well-known and popular because of his plays.
Some of his plays include:
- Black Lands (written in 1868)
- Artashes the Conqueror (written in 1869)
- Fall of the House of the Arsacids (written in 1870)
- Capture of Ani, the Capital of Armenia (written in 1871)
- Theatre or the Miserables (written in 1871)
His play Theatre or The Miserables talked about problems in society, like unfairness and bad behavior. If Bedros Tourian had lived longer, he might have written even more amazing plays. Today, he is mostly remembered for his beautiful poems, even though his plays first made him famous when he was alive.
The Poem "Little Lake"
Bedros Tourian knew he would die young, and this made him feel many different emotions. These feelings, along with his sadness about not being able to do more for his nation, are shown in his writing.
One of his famous poems is called Little Lake. It is said that this poem was inspired by something he overheard. He was in love with an actress, and he heard her say something like, "Oh, him? He's shaking and so pale—he might even die soon!" This comment, sadly, turned out to be true.
