Belle and Sebastian is a famous story from 1965. It was written by Cécile Aubry. The story is about a six-year-old boy named Sébastien and his amazing dog Belle. Belle is a big, fluffy dog, a type called a Pyrenean Mountain Dog. They live in a small village high up in the French Alps, near the border with Italy.

Sébastien lives with his adopted grandfather, sister, and brother. His mother passed away when he was born while traveling. The novel is known as Belle and Sebastian in English-speaking countries. It has been made into many different shows and movies. These include a French live-action TV series in 1965, a Japanese anime cartoon in 1981, and a movie in 2013. Two more movies followed in 2015 and 2017.

Stories of Belle and Sebastian

The adventures of Belle and Sebastian have been told in many ways. These include TV shows and movies.

The First TV Series (1965–1970)

The original novel was first made into a live-action TV show in France. It was filmed in black and white. The BBC, a British TV company, translated the show into English. They called it "Belle and Sebastian." It became very popular with children and was shown many times.

This TV series led to two more parts, filmed in color. The first sequel was called Sebastien parmi les Hommes (Sebastien Among Men) in 1968. The BBC renamed it Belle, Sebastian and the Horses. The second sequel was Sebastien et la Mary-Morgane (Sebastian and the Mary Morgan) in 1970. The BBC did not show this second sequel.

A Scottish indie pop music group, Belle & Sebastian, chose their name because they loved this TV series.

The Anime Cartoon (1981)

An anime (Japanese cartoon) version of the story was made in 1980. Its Japanese name was Meiken Jolie. This cartoon was a team effort by MK Company, Visual 80 Productions, and Toho Company, Ltd.. Toshiyuki Kashiwakura was the director for the animation. Shuichi Seki designed the characters.

The show was first shown on TV in France, Italy, and Japan in 1981. Later, in 1984, the American TV channel Nickelodeon started showing it.

The 2013 Movie

In 2013, the novel was made into a movie again. Director Nicolas Vanier made this film. Its original French title was Belle et Sébastien. This movie was made for families. It was set in 1943, near the French–Swiss border. The film added a new storyline about people trying to cross the mountains to escape danger. This was combined with the original story of a boy and his dog becoming friends.

The 2015 Movie Sequel

A second movie, continuing the story from the 2013 film, was released on December 9, 2015. This movie was called Belle et Sébastien: l'aventure continue. It was set in 1945. A Canadian director named Christian Duguay directed this film.

The 2017 TV Series

Another TV show based on Belle and Sebastian was made in 2017. This show was produced by Gaumont Animation. It was shown on Knowledge in British Columbia, Canada.
